Gallery Happenings
NEW BENNETT PRINTS — June 9, 2008: The Gallery has added
several signed and numbered limited edition giclée prints by Gil Bennett as well as one open edition print.
NEW ARTIST — May 22, 2008: The Gallery is pleased to
welcome Fred Carlson as its newest featured artist. Fred is a mechanical engineer working in the
railroad industry and has been painting all of his adult life. He attended the School of the Art Institute of
Chicago for three years, majoring in illustration, industrial design, commercial art and architecture. After switching
majors two times, he had doubts about what course he wanted to take, so he decided to enlist in the service. After serving
in the Air Force for four years during Vietnam, he decided to become a mechanical engineer, but he kept painting
transportation subjects, concentrating on railroads. Fred's work has been published on magazine covers, and hangs in
railroad and railroad supplier corporate offices. An active model railroader, he regularly holds operating sessions on his
layout and presently serves as president of the NMRA's Rocky Mountain Region. Giclée prints of 30 of his paintings are
currently available through The Gallery, and original works will be added as he completes them.
EIGHT NEW HOWE ORIGINALS — Apr. 24, 2008: The Gallery has just added
eight more originals from noted railroad artist Tony Howe. Six works depict railroading in the South,
while the other two depict logging railroads. These are truly wonderful works and are welcomed additions to The Gallery.
THREE NEW DESOBEAU ORIGINALS — Apr. 22, 2008: The Gallery has just added
three more originals from talented railroad artist Marc Desobeau, the Artist of the Rails®. These three works
depict scenes between Ogden, Utah, and Green River, Wyoming. As a UP engineer who worked this district for many years, Marc is
quite familiar with the locales depicted in Mixed Freight, Green River Soda and An Apple
in Echo. These are absolutely exquisite works and are exciting new additions to The Gallery.
NEW ARTIST — Mar. 25, 2008: The Gallery is honored to
welcome Andrew Harmantas as its newest featured artist. Andrew's paintings have been published
extensively in the railfan press, with over fifty being used as book and magazine covers, frontispieces and featured
spreads. Readers of Mainline Modeler have seen many of his paintings featured on covers over the years. While
attending Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD, he came to know the Western Maryland Railroad, a fortuitous event
that shaped the direction of his painting, as scenes along the Western Maryland became a recurring theme and continue to be
subjects in many of his paintings today. His works are included in hundreds of corporate and private collections, museums, as
well as the Pentagon's Army Art Collection. Except for the time he spent in combat in Vietnam, he has painted all of his
life.
NEW ARTIST — Mar. 14, 2008: The Gallery is pleased to
welcome Gil Bennett as its newest featured artist. Gil, a life long artist and railfan, has been a professional illustrator
since 1984. He graduated from the University of Utah's Art Department, and has continued to study and develop his style.
Noted railroad artists like Howard Fogg and Ted Rose took an interest in Gil's artwork and let him know how he could improve
both his watercolors and oils. In 1995, Howard called Gil the "heir apparent" and encouraged him to paint as much as
possible...he has been doing his best to follow that advice ever since. Gil calls himself an "artistrator," a term he coined
to describe his style, which blends the expression of an artist with the technical detail of an illustrator. As you look at
his work, you will be able to see what he means. I am pleased to be able to offer his work through The Gallery. His
book, Railway Reflections is also now available on the Books page. (Giclée prints will
be available soon.)
NEW MURPHY ORIGINAL — Jan. 23, 2008: The Gallery has just added
another original from noted railroad artist John Murphy. His work, simply entitled 5499, is a truly exciting new
addition to The Gallery.
NEW ARTIST — Dec. 5, 2007: The Gallery is pleased to welcome John R. Murphy
as its newest featured artist. John's exquisite Susquehanna Afternoon is an
important work of rail art, and I am pleased to be able to offer it through The Gallery. We have also added two new
limited edition Giclée prints from John.
